8 - Month Artist & Art Movement Journey for Ages 4-8

Discover new techniques, explore colour and form, and create detailed and meaningful art inspired by the masters!

Month 1 May 2026 Piet Mondrian & De Stijl The colour wheel and introduction to basic shapes (squares, rectangles, lines) and how to balance compositions with primary colors.
Month 2 June 2026 Vincent van Gogh & Post-Impressionism Mixing colors and introduction to brush types, brush strokes, and texture in painting. Learn to express movement and emotion through paint.
Month 3 July 2026 Pablo Picasso & Cubism Drawing faces and exploring different expressions. Understand breaking apart shapes to look at subjects from multiple angles.
Month 4 August 2026 John Muafangejo Storytelling with bold black & white prints. Introduction to patterns and symbolism in art, and basics of printmaking concepts using rubbings and collage.
Month 5 September 2026 Paul Klee Color emotions, creating abstract shapes, and exploring rhythm in art—how colors and forms can make us feel and “dance.”
Month 6 October 2026 Georgia O’Keeffe Observing nature’s close-up details. Using soft color blending techniques to paint flowers and natural forms with gentle shapes.
Month 7 November 2026 Frida Kahlo Expressing personal stories and emotions through symbolic and vivid folk art patterns. Self-expression through colors and mixed media.


Month 1: May 2026 — Piet Mondrian & De Stijl

Learning Focus: Basics of primary colors (red, blue, yellow), simple shapes (squares, lines), and balanced composition.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Introduction to primary colors and shapes. Cut and glue paper squares and rectangles.
Week 2 Learn about lines and how Mondrian used grids. Use masking tape grid to paint inside squares with primary colors.
Week 3 Explore balance and asymmetry in art composition. Create asymmetrical paper collages.
Week 4 Free creative session combining all learned techniques.


Month 2: June 2026 — Vincent van Gogh & Post-Impressionism

Learning Focus: Color mixing basics and introduction to brushes, brush strokes, and texture.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Learn about Van Gogh’s color palette. Mix primary colors to make new colors.
Week 2 Practice brush strokes — swirls, dots, and thick textures using finger paint and brushes.
Week 3 Express emotions through brushstrokes in painting landscapes or starry skies.
Week 4 Free exploration of swirling textures with mixed brush and finger painting.


Month 3: July 2026 — Pablo Picasso & Cubism

Learning Focus: Drawing and understanding facial features, exploring abstracted and cubist facial perspectives.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Introduction to face parts and practicing drawing simple faces.
Week 2 Explore expressions by changing eyes, mouths, and eyebrows.
Week 3 Create cubist-inspired portraits using cut paper and drawing layered facial shapes.
Week 4 Collage and decorate imaginative and abstract faces combining shapes and colors.

Month 4: August 2026 — John Muafangejo

Learning Focus: Bold black & white contrast, pattern making, and printmaking basics.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Storytelling and exploration of black & white contrasts. Collage with black and white paper.
Week 2 Learn to create repeated patterns with white crayons and black markers.
Week 3 Simulated printmaking with texture rubbings using crayons on paper.
Week 4 Combine collage, patterns, and rubbings to create personal story art.


Month 5: September 2026 — Paul Klee

Learning Focus: Using color to express emotions, abstract shapes, and rhythm in art.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Introduction to how colors can show feelings (happy, calm, excited). Paint abstract shapes.
Week 2 Explore simple abstract shapes and lines, learning layering techniques.
Week 3 Study movement and rhythm — create “dancing” lines and color patterns with brushes and crayons.
Week 4 Combine colors, shapes, and rhythms in a free abstract painting.


Month 6: October 2026 — Georgia O’Keeffe

Learning Focus: Observing nature’s details, watercolor blending, and soft shape painting.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Observing flower shapes by drawing and touching natural objects.
Week 2 Practice watercolor blending with gentle flower colors.
Week 3 Paint close-up flowers focusing on soft edges and shapes.
Week 4 Mixed media nature study with crayon resist and watercolor techniques.


Month 7: November 2026 — Frida Kahlo

Learning Focus: Personal storytelling and symbolic folk art patterns using mixed media.

Week Focus & Activities
Week 1 Learn about Frida Kahlo and her use of symbolism. Draw folk art patterns.
Week 2 Create painted masks or portraits decorated with folk patterns.
Week 3 Mixed media self-portraits incorporating yarn, sequins, and paint.
Week 4 Use natural materials combined with paint to add textures and patterns in a final project.


Month 8 December 2026 — Exhibition, Exhibition Prep & Celebration


Our Exhibition Journey:

  • Children will select their best and favorite artworks created throughout the year for the exhibition display.
  • I will guide them through the entire exhibition process, teaching how exhibitions work, including planning, organizing, and displaying artwork.
  • Students will actively participate in preparing the exhibition: deciding on layout, mounting, labeling, and hanging their artwork.
  • Together, we will create a professional and inviting art exhibition space showcasing their creative journey.
  • Family and friends will be invited to attend the exhibition, giving children the opportunity to present their artwork and explain their creative process.
  • After the exhibition, we will have a joyful celebration party with music, snacks, and certificates recognizing each child’s hard work and creativity.

Month 8 December 2026 Exhibition & Celebration Over two weeks, students will select their best work and learn how exhibitions are planned and organized. They will participate in laying out, mounting, labeling, and hanging their artwork to create a full exhibition space. Family and friends will be invited to view the exhibition, followed by a celebration party to honor the year’s creative achievements.
